Developmental Studies College Policies
College
Preparatory Reading (REA), English (ENC), and Mathematics (MAT) Courses
Requirements in College-Preparatory Reading
If
you place into a college-preparatory reading course, you must:
(1)
enroll during your first semester in either the course or the Success Center
Reading Laboratory and
(2)
continue with a reading course or the lab until you have completed the reading
requirement or tested out of developmental reading.
Requirements in One College-Preparatory
(English or Math) Other Than Reading:
If you place into college-level reading but
college-preparatory English or math, you must enroll in at least one of the
required college-preparatory courses during your first term and must continue in
that discipline each term thereafter until you have completed the requirements.
Requirements in Two College-Preparatory Areas:
Each semester you have placed into two
college-preparatory areas including reading, you must address the reading
deficiency by enrolling either in a college-preparatory course or the Success
Center Reading Laboratory. If you
choose the Success Center Reading Laboratory, you must place out of
developmental reading by retaking the College Placement Test.
Each semester you have placed into two college-preparatory areas
excluding reading, you must enroll in at least one college-preparatory class.
Requirements in Three College-Preparatory
Areas:
Each term you have placed into three
college-preparatory courses, you must enroll in a reading course or the Success
Center Reading Laboratory and at least one other college-preparatory course.
Sequence of Courses:
Once you enroll in a college-preparatory
course in reading, English, or math, you must continue to enroll in that
discipline until you have satisfied your college-preparatory requirements for
that area.
Withdrawal Policy:
Developmental Studies Students cannot
withdraw from Developmental Studies courses (college-preparatory classes) after
the drop/add period without written permission from a developmental academic
advisor.
Exemption Policy:
If you are a non-degree seeking student
(enrolled in a Technical Certificate Program, as a transient student, for
teacher certification, for job improvement, or with no intent of a Gulf Coast
Community College degree), you are not required to take college-preparatory
course(s) unless needed as a prerequisite for a specific course.
If you are enrolled in an Applied Technology Diploma or Vocational Credit
Certificate Program, you may be required to take college-preparatory courses.
